Project Overview

Location: Mongolia (Connecting Ulaanbaatar to the New Airport)

Application: Highway Subgrade Reinforcement & Stabilization

Core Products: High-Strength Geogrid, HDPE Geocell, Geotextile

Project Challenge: Constructing a durable, high-standard highway in a region with extreme cold climates and complex geological conditions.

Background & Engineering Challenges

This landmark project, built to Chinese standards, marks a significant milestone in China-Mongolia relations, celebrating the 70th anniversary of their diplomatic ties. As Mongolia's first modern highway, it was designed to be a symbol of friendship and a catalyst for economic development. The primary engineering challenge was ensuring the long-term stability and durability of the road in a severe cold climate with unique geological characteristics. The design required materials capable of withstanding extreme temperature fluctuations while providing superior reinforcement to prevent subgrade failure and ensure a smooth, long-lasting pavement.

Our Geosynthetic Solution

To meet the project's stringent quality and performance requirements, Zhongloo supplied a suite of high-performance geosynthetic products that were integral to the road's construction.

Subgrade Reinforcement with Geogrid: Our high-tensile-strength geogrids were used to reinforce the road subgrade. By interlocking with the soil and aggregate base, the geogrids distribute traffic loads over a wider area, significantly increasing the bearing capacity of the subgrade and preventing differential settlement. This is critical for maintaining the road's structural integrity in freeze-thaw cycles.

Slope & Base Stabilization with Geocell: HDPE Geocells were deployed for slope protection and base stabilization. This three-dimensional cellular confinement system confines and reinforces the infill material, creating a robust and flexible mattress that resists erosion and enhances the overall stability of the road embankment.

Separation and Filtration with Geotextile: Non-woven geotextiles were installed to provide separation between different soil layers and the aggregate base. This prevents the intermixing of materials, maintains the drainage capacity of the base course, and improves the overall performance and lifespan of the pavement structure.

Project Outcomes & Value Delivered

The successful integration of Zhongloo's geosynthetic products contributed directly to the project's success, meeting the rigorous standards set by the chief engineers.

Superior Road Quality: The use of our geogrids and geocells was instrumental in achieving exceptional pavement smoothness, with the overall flatness controlled to a high standard of under 0.8mm, ensuring a comfortable and safe driving experience.

Enhanced Durability in Extreme Climates: Our products provided the necessary reinforcement to withstand Mongolia's harsh, cold environment, ensuring the highway's long-term stability and reducing future maintenance costs.

A Landmark of Quality and Friendship: By passing strict quality screenings to become a partner in this prestigious project, Zhongloo demonstrated the reliability and high performance of its products on an international stage, contributing to a key infrastructure project that strengthens the bond between China and Mongolia.
